A few months ago I was walking through a refurbishment center in the evening after most of the floor had emptied out.
One technician was still under a car on a hydraulic lift, finishing a job that another team could easily have picked up the next morning. His shift had ended. The vehicle was scheduled for early delivery. I asked him why he was still there.
He said the customer needed the car early because there was a wedding in the family, and he had told the team he would close it.
I have thought about that sentence often.
Not because it was dramatic. Because it was precise.
He saw an open loop and closed it.
That is the role I increasingly believe matters most in the modern company.
Builder.
Not builder as a flattering word for founders. Not builder as a synonym for only engineers. Builder as the person who can see what needs to happen and change reality directly.
The old prestige system rewarded distance
For a long time, companies rewarded a different kind of person.
The person who stood further from the work, coordinated the people doing it, translated their status into the preferred language of the next layer, routed decisions back downward, and accumulated legitimacy through distance from direct execution.
That system did not emerge because leaders were evil or organizations were stupid. It emerged because context was expensive. Coordination was scarce. Information moved badly. A scaled company needed translators, routers, reviewers, summarizers, and supervisors because that was how coherence was maintained.
So we turned distance from the problem into a ladder.
The person closest to the customer sat below the person explaining the customer. The person closest to the machine sat below the person reporting on the machine. The person writing the code sat below the person converting the code into a roadmap update for someone who no longer needed to know the code at all.
That hierarchy was never especially beautiful. But it was administratively useful.
Now a meaningful part of that usefulness is eroding.
Coordination is losing prestige value
This is what many people still miss in the AI conversation.
When context becomes cheaper to gather, cheaper to move, and cheaper to act on, the value of pure coordination falls. Not to zero. But enough to change the prestige system.
If systems can make the state of a business far more visible, if messy operational reality can be summarized without three human relays, if the person nearest the problem can access more of the relevant context directly, then the premium shifts.
The highest-value person is no longer automatically the one furthest from the work.
Increasingly it is the one closest to the work who can actually close the loop.
That is what a builder is.
The technician who finishes the vehicle because the family needs it.
The inside-sales operator who calls the customer back because the first answer did not solve the problem.
The engineer who sees the system straining and fixes it before the outage becomes public.
The analyst who spots a supply failure and resolves it before three teams spend a week narrating it.
The HR partner who catches the payroll error before an employee has to start chasing dignity through tickets and reminders.
Different functions. Same value.
Direct change to reality.
This is not anti-manager
Any essay like this risks getting misread as anti-management. I do not mean it that way.
Real management remains essential.
Judgment is essential. Hiring is essential. Standards are essential. Coaching is essential. Conflict resolution is essential. Safety, compliance, and capital allocation still require real authority. A serious company cannot pretend otherwise.
What is weakening is not management. It is the prestige attached to coordination theater.
Chase emails. Status collection. The reformatted update for the next layer. The meeting held because no one had a shared picture of reality without sitting together for an hour. The person whose main function is to supervise distance from consequence.
That was never the highest form of management. It was overhead made respectable.
The best managers are builders too.
They build clarity. They remove friction. They make hard calls. They coach judgment. They increase the loop-closing capacity of other people. Their contribution is not that they escaped the work. It is that they multiply it.
The future is not anti-manager.
It is anti-spectator.
Titles should be coordinates, not coronations
This is also why I think titles matter less than many companies believe, and differently than many companies use them.
A title should be a coordinate in a system, not a coronation.
It should help people understand scope, responsibility, and decision rights. It should not become an argument for why some people deserve more dignity than others simply because they sit further from the original problem.
The day a title starts deciding who gets context, who gets heard, and who gets presumed intelligent independent of proximity to the problem, the title has stopped being useful. It has become a gate.
Strong companies should become less tolerant of gates.
Not because hierarchy is evil. Because unnecessary distance is expensive.
Every layer between a problem and the person who can solve it adds tax. On speed. On accuracy. On morale. On learning. On truth.
The customer does not care how elegant the escalation path looked. The customer cares whether the loop closed.
Dignity has to move outward
There is another reason this matters.
A company that says it values builders cannot keep pretending that work becomes nobler as it moves farther from consequence.
If two people are both closing loops that matter, the difference between them is domain, not dignity.
That is a line many companies claim to believe and violate every day.
They praise ownership in theory while preserving status in practice.
They speak the language of agency while quietly teaching the organization that some people are the real thinkers and others are support functions orbiting them.
People doing indispensable work can feel that lie long before leadership admits it.
The modern company needs a better status system.
Not one that glorifies exhaustion. Not one that romanticizes chaos. Not one that confuses burnout with commitment.
A better one.
One that says the person who can see clearly, act directly, carry consequence, and close the loop is doing the real work of the company, regardless of where they sit.
Agency without consequence is theater
This is the part that sounds attractive until you live it.
Real agency is expensive.
It means there is no one to hide behind when the call was yours and the outcome was bad. It means the broken version belongs to you too. It means the comfort of saying, accurately but uselessly, "it was not my job" starts disappearing.
Many people say they want autonomy.
Fewer people want consequence.
The two are inseparable.
That is why builder is not a motivational label. It is a structural role with a psychological price. Less permission. Less ceremony. Less positional status. More exposure. More directness. More responsibility. More days where the important question is not your level, but whether you closed what was yours to close.
Some people will find that exhilarating.
Some will find it exhausting.
Both reactions are legitimate.
But the market is moving toward the first kind of person.
Builder is an economic category now
This is where the argument becomes bigger than culture.
In a world where coordination is cheaper, the person who can close the loop compounds faster than the person who mainly routes it.
That is not a slogan. It is an economic shift.
Better systems accelerate it. AI accelerates it. Wider access to context accelerates it. The old prestige attached to supervising distance from the work weakens as the work itself becomes more legible and more directly solvable.
This is why I do not think builder is a cute internal word.
It is a category of value creation.
The strongest companies of the next decade will move dignity outward, context outward, and authority outward wherever the problem allows it. They will still keep hierarchy where hierarchy protects quality, safety, or coherence. But they will stop pretending that status should flow automatically to the people farthest from the work.
The old company built prestige around commentary, coordination theater, and distance from execution.
The next strong company will rebuild prestige around proximity to the problem.
That is what I mean by builder.
Not a heroic identity.
Not a flattering label.
The only role left that still compounds cleanly when context gets cheaper and reality gets harder to hide from.
